I will be very much going to consider to the direction of digitization, because of I feel I the friendship with the internet. Because it was a time in my childhood when to sending an email, communicate through email, and to meet people through IRC/MIRC from different part of the world, is a very big revolution. Because for somebody that live – such in a very small town, you need an idea about the world. And the internet bring this to be possible for us. To See The World

Four months ago I was choosen, and very lucky to have the chance to be part of the Coding Da Vinci, Hackathon in Bavaria in Munich, also be in the residency program — stay for two months. It was a new platform In my life, in the way I experience residency program. And it was very huge theme, because you want to bring open data, open knowledge and also digitization and also to create a platform and think to distribute it in very creative way.

That’s what the idea to meet the GLAM & The Hackers, so we can find a solution and not only talking about a how to share out knowledge to people. Make it more open and transparent and it can be very accessible. It was started with the kick off. We are going to presentation and meeting with the digital division/department that this institution in Bavaria has it. And its was so huge in Bavaria. You have everything you need, such as the tools, archiving center, man resource, stored in the super computer, and then you talk to make it open, then when you talk about to make it open. And then this, then means you have to create a platform. have to make it in such a revolution. Because then you have to change the way people enjoying or consuming the stream of data about art & culture in very different material. It shifted or it can be complimentary.

Some thought I was a complementary, like : you go to exhibition, then you see the artworks, and found a barcode and you scan it and you found the catalogue about the exhibition. The is the sampe, how the digital format can extended the way you present on the art&culture.

This can be one of the basic ide to bring people to come to Germany & meet those actors who start to do it. And there is a very big movement about it. Digitization in Germany.

Before hand, we receive some data from some institution (museum, gallery, library, archive center). And the participant(us) has the possibilities to see what we like from the data. The organizer of Coding Da Vinci is like a association of people who are very care about art and culture, the founder name is Stephan Bartolomei. So was did it like, came to museum, different museum (antrophology museum, art museum, zoology museum and so on).

They have the data and we do several webinars. The participant coming from Indonesia, South Africa, South America. We are talking about what is hackathon. And possibly most of us thinking about hacking a data from places and stuff like that.

Hackathon (Hacking Marathon) is about how to do something in very different way in marathon (fast, estafet, long run). Its been used in many time, occasion by the hackers to find many solution. People are mostly coined to a person whom crack the system and steal your money. Or hacking your data through your email. And bad people. — These are the general way of public understand what is hacking and what is hackers. Lol :PP

But there are a very good meaning — Hackers are people doing stuff in another way. Normally they do in a good way. Sometimes they do artistic and beauty. And hacker is not necessarily working with software but also with movement. But of course in this context of hackathon we are talking about people who working with software. It can be everyone : software developer, game maker, database maker, archivist, etc. The last part I mentioned, archivist these day has to deal with certain platform, like ya, software right. As a very important role to create platform, this is very interesting too.

I was also working at IVAA in 2009, what I do I has to scan whatever 10 year, 20 years archive in very different topic, whatever : women artist, social-political art and so on and so on, and bring this to be in digital by scan it. That was my idea about archive and digitize.

But what I see in Bavaria new media and old media (scanned photos, videos), they still have old media but the more in new media to do this archiving. It was very interesting. We have a week of kick off. We visiting a lot of places, which has big archive, big data and material. And last week we have the kick off, we meet public outside of the groups.

Peoples who has idea to do with this hackathon. I was meet a guy from Tubingen University, he is studying computer science. Also 2 girls from the same Uni. Also with Albert. We had a idea to make a game from The Post & Telecommunication Museum in Nurnberg.

After everyone is leaving (the rest of the group from Goethe), I stay in Munich for another 7 weeks and had the residency. So, I am a curator. I mainly work with contemporary art and media art. I am strongly interest with the hackers, about the makers. I think that hacktivism is something that someway still to making art. And  I feel for me its still important to make this project, we can always hack to make everything more beautiful.

I learn a lot in 7 weeks about python, about unity, about those things I want to learn but I don’t have time. So, I’m very grateful by this residency I have time to learn python. And of course during my stay in Bavaria I meet a lot of people.

I meet people from CCC, Make Munich, Game Bavaria. People are not that free. Its very busy city, just like Jakarta. Its not like Jogja, the place where I live. Artist dedicating to make project or something in big very relax way. They was asking me to had course, and its not free to learn python. And I found it very funny. And interesting.

Media

The are a lot of layers internet can do. Its actually very stong media. In my childhood when people are very asthonised by television, radio, mobile phone. Then, the internet. And I think we can do something with it. And I think people in Indonesia are very happy too about the internet. As the medium. People keen to stream the data, people want to communicate with people. To make capital, to make publicity. And to create a different room & space in this world. In the internet the digital world has to be the extention of this consciousness. Its also anser our question, our problem several years ago about how we can present the art and culture. It was not so much people in Instagram like now. Instagram shift behavior of people, they have consciousness to make composition, artistic composition. Bring the stream of the photos and now the videos through this virtual world. So this cybernetics world has strong and getting stronger we have. Let say in 2012-2013 ; we have conference and discussion talking about how we can bring art & cultures more closer to public. Because we don’t want to have any gap with public. I am thinking that today, people are somehow. They are getting closer. Like what I have in my exhibiton. Everyday there are thousands of people coming to artjog just to take a selfies with the artworks. A sweet irony for me. Because now people has acess to enjoy Handiwirman studio, this great artist nobody can visit his studio. Because he don’t public himself. Or now people can see another side of sisingamangaraja story, and many more.

Now we have our public and we have to bring them to consume more and more knowledge, comprehend history about Indonesian art, or bring them to what I experience in Germany. Enjoying old data about our art history in game, ar, vr game, and those technology can create an extention of the world. Because reading in books are pretty traditional way, we can actually read in so many way. And for me this is pretty interesting to curate in digital world because you can do and explore more in diverse media. and that’s my prefaces. And follow with photos, video, and projects about Global Post Master.
